Another relaxed morning, we gather to enjoy our last breakfast on the banks of the Orange River. We will have some time to explore the river’s edge by foot and for those who like can take a morning swim in the river (it is safe to do so)
We will all enjoy an early lunch before setting off to our next destination in Aus. Today we traverse the Ais Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and enjoy the spectacular drive westward along the Orange River where we will have some time to enjoy the scenery and possibly a swim in the river during lunch, before setting off to an area called Aus, which is a famous area to see some of the wild desert horses. Being Wild animals, there is never a guarantee that they will be around however we will try and spot them at these waterholes.
We spend the next two nights in the small town of Aus, from where we will visit the coastal town of Lüderitz, known for its colonial architecture and wildlife including seals, penguins, flamingos, and ostriches. Here we will also partake in an ocean cruise to try and spot some of the oceanic wildlife that occurs in this area. We also visit the photogenic ghost town of Kolmanskop, an old, abandoned mining town, where sand dunes have invaded houses and where one can see how nature takes over.
The Ghost Town of Kolmanskop - Once the site of a prosperous diamond mine, the town is slowly being reclaimed by the shifting sands of the desert. We enjoy an entertaining walk around the town and through the old buildings that brings the colourful history to life.
Lüderitz is a small harbour town on one of the most inhospitable coasts imaginable. We will visit the cross planted here by Dias in 1487 and will spend some time strolling around town, enjoying the unique architecture.
